Works For Me Wednesday: Reusing Plastic Bags

Welcome to my blog! Today is Works for Me Wednesday: Backwards Edition (hosted by We Are THAT Family), so I will ask you all for solutions to a quandary of mine. MWUAHAHAHA...

I have a confession to make: I have about a million plastic grocery bags stashed in a closet. The past month or so, I have been taking my own reusable bags to the store, so I've slowed down the rate at which those things are reproducing, but I still have a good amount of them!

I hate to throw them away since they can be reused; I'd like to know the clever ways you all have used plastic bags.

So far, this is what I use them for:
  • Trash can liners
  • Packing material (instead of foam peanuts or newspaper)
  • Wet swimsuit/dirty laundry bag when away from home
What else can I do to use up my army of plastic bags??

  1. I have this problem too. I use mostly reusable bags, but refuse to throw away a plastic bag if I get one. I actually found a local thrift store that I give mine too when I just have too many. They need the bags for their store and I need to get rid of mine. Win win!

  2. You can recycle unwanted plastic bags at most grocery stores. I know that Publix and Walmart have places to recycle them.

  3. You can give them to someone who is having a garage sale! They'll be great for people to haul away their treasures in:) I've also heard you can use them to braid a rug...not sure where I saw that though!

  4. Diaper disposals! I see you don't have kids yet, but you can give them to someone who does. :) I keep one or two in my diaper bag. Or use them as little trash bags for your car.

  5. Well, with a dog, two cats and two ferrets, you can guess what I use them for, LOL!
I'm going to try something soon that will involve grocery bags. Did you ever see that "Topsy Turvy" thing that grows tomatoes upside down on your deck? Well, I looked at it and it doesn't seem to be much more than a glorified plastic bag. It doesn't even come with potting soil or seeds. So I'm going to fill a plastic bag with potting soil, stick in a tomato plant, tie it off and hang it upside down on my deck. I'm curious to see if I can grow a plant that way, although I'm sure I'll have to vent the bag, too. We'll see how it works!
PS--you can look on line for instructions, but apparently if you iron a bunch of them together you can get a really nice 'vinyl-like fabric' from which you can make things.

  6. You can cut them into strips and make plastic "yarn" to crochet and knit with!

  7. I've heard of people using them for their kitty litter liners. We also take them back to the store to reuse. :D
